Yo no voy porque se me engancha la cadena en la pelambrera

Bicienjambre no tiene derechos de autor, ni propietarios, ni limitaciones físicas o temporales: te lo puedes montar tú en tu barrio mañana mismo. De hecho, queremos que te subas a la bici, metas una cámara de fotos en la mochila, llames a cuatro colegas como tú y salgas a la calle porque, querido biciloco, ¡tú puedes organizar un Bicienjambre!

Más fácil que el aeropuerto que montamos con masilla la semana pasada

El objetivo primordial estriba en que las bicis reclamen su espacio natural en la calzada. Fíjate en la negrita, porque «natural» y« calzada» resultan clave.

Es natural porque no queremos bloquear artificialmente el tráfico, sino integrarnos y fluir en él, como lo harías cualquier otro día, pero con la ventaja de pedalear con algunas bicis más, haciéndote aún más visible.

Y destaca la calzada porque en ella –legal y moralmente– han de circular todos los vehículos. Los automóviles, los peatones y ciclistas han de verte sobre el asfalto. No montes un Bicienjambre por un parque o por la acera para atropellar a las pobres abuelitas de tu barrio, ¡ellas no lo harían!

Podría ser tu abuela, ¡bájate de la acera, hombre!

Aunque no hay unas reglas fijas ni un departamento de calidad que tenga que aprobar lo que haces, todas las convocatorias han tenido unos puntos comunes. Por tanto, para organizar un Bicienjambre necesitas:

- Una temática, de cualquier tipo (social, lúdica o cultural) que motive a los participantes a asistir. Puede coincidir con una celebración local, un personaje, un juego, un evento ciclista o una disciplina que te guste. El tema será la suma de:

- Unos objetivos. Alrededor de diez puntos que habrá que encontrar, crear, recoger, fotografiar, representar, pintar… o lo que se te ocurra. A veces hace falta dar una chispa especial para que se circule por la ciudad. Si repartes los objetivos por áreas, los grupos de bicis se desplazarán, haciéndose visibles a conductores y peatones y divirtiéndose en el proceso.

Ay, Paco, mejor para y le pregunto a ese señor…

- Un punto de llegada. En él, los participantes podrán charlar de la experiencia, sobre la bici, la ciudad/el barrio/pueblo y compartir las fotos. Idealmente, el local debería permitir entrar con bicicletas.

- Difusión en forma de carteles y octavillas y de presencia online. Hay muchas biciabejas interesadas en circular y divertirse: lleva octavillas siempre en el bolsillo para dársela a un ciclista con el que te cruces; cuelga carteles en el centro social de tu barrio, el supermercado o en la tienda de bicis de la esquina; haz uso de Twitter, Facebook o cualquier otro medio para difundir la actividad. Realmente cualquier plataforma es buena para darte a conocer.

- No te pares. Funda una pequeña masa crítica creativa y organizáos. Rodéate de personas creativas, positivas y de mente abierta que tengan buenas y locas ideas para que una convocatoria dé paso a otra. Trabaja en equipo con ellos y el proceso será sencillo. Aprende de los errores y cada vez disfrutarás más de la actividad.

- Hazlo tuyo. Hazlo a tu gusto; si no te gusta este Bicienjambre, crea otro. Si te mudas de ciudad, llévate las ideas y funda una nueva colmena. Si las fechas que tenemos chocan con tu agenda, empieza tu colmena allí donde y cuando mejor te venga. Nadie va a decirte nada, sino al contrario, ¡cuenta con nuestro apoyo!

Os presentamos nuestro proyecto principal para el 2012: la Bici Escola. Cuando uno quiere conducir un vehículo a motor, va a lo que se conoce popularmente como una autoescuela.

Pero, ¿y si quieres conducir una bici?

Está claro que la bici ofrece esa libertad y accesibilidad de no ser necesario un permiso legal. Pero esto también representa un inconveniente para mucha gente que piensa que ir en bici es como un peatón con ruedas, y las normas no van con él. También hay gente que quiere dar el paso de ir en bici pero necesita una ayudita.

También hay que tener en cuenta que moverse en bici es genial y muy barato. Pero no negamos que tiene unos inconvenientes:

- Es un vehículo muy vulnerable a los robos

- La velocidad y el tamaño de los coches, dan miedo a mucha gente

Estos inconvenientes se pueden minimizar casi totalmente enseñando todas las técnicas que hay para evitar los robos, y hacerse respetar por los vehículos a motor.

Vila-real en bici quiere difundir toda su experiencia y conocimiento para que la gente pueda pedalear por nuestras calles, como nosostros.

Es por esto que hemos creado la Bici Escola. Tu papá o un primo te enseñó a ir en bici. Nosotros vamos a formarte a circular pedaleando.

Si tienes un grupo, llámanos, iremos y haremos una charla amena, sobre las razones de ir en bici, consejos de seguridad, pautas para que no nos roben la bici, asesoramiento…. Todo con el apoyo de vídeos, y material pedagógico para hacerlo más divertido. Da igual que sean niños, jóvenes o mayores: nos adaptamos al grupo.

Si eres una persona, que quieres probar a ir en bici, pero tienes miedo, llámanos. Haremos un grupito de 3-4 personas, y te planificaremos el mejor itinerario para ir a trabajar, comprar, estudiar…. Haremos el recorrido contigo, un día tranquilo de tráfico (sábado i domingo) y pedalenado te diremos qué cosas hacer, para que moverse en bici sea fácil y seguro.

Nunca fue tan fácil dar el paso de intentar dejar el coche en casa, y hacer el mismo recorrido en bici. Ah, y el precio es gratuito. Esta tarea entra dentro de nuestra línea de educar por una nueva movilidad, y promocionar la bici como medio de transporte.

Introduction

Building a cyclist friendly community requires a combination of social and physical structures. Like a  pyramid, these structures must be built upon a solid foundation, or they will collapse.

When the foundation is strong and the layers of the pyramid reinforce each other, they will support a healthy, thriving bicycle culture.

1) Foundation: Cultural Respect

Bicycles are Vehicles/Cyclists are Drivers

This is the foundation upon which a healthy bike culture must be built. It supports all other advocacy efforts, and the lack of it undermines them. Likewise, advocacy efforts must support this foundation, not erode it.

It begins with the law—not just the legal definition of bicycles as vehicles, but legal equity and access to the roadway. Laws which restrict cyclists’ use of a travel lane (Far Right and Mandatory Bike Lane/Shoulder/Sidepath laws) must be eliminated. Even with exceptions, these laws carry discriminatory weight and are most often misinterpreted to the detriment of cyclists.

Institutional bias also extends to transportation engineers and the standards set for bicycle facilities. Current minimum standards for bike lanes (and even sharrow placement) are harmful to people on bicycles. Coupled with mandatory use laws and social pressure from motorists, they restrict—rather than facilitate—access to the roadway. Current institutional research is equally destructive, concentrating on the “feelings” of novice bicyclists often at the expense of both the operational characteristics of bicycles and the needs of competent bicycle drivers.

Correcting institutional bias is the basis for changing the cultural norms — bicycles must be a normal, accepted, respected part of the transportation system (vehicles, not toys). This bias must be corrected with education of law enforcement, planners, engineers and policy-makers.

When our culture treats bicycles as vehicles, the average person will think of himself as a driver when on a bicycle, thus be more inclined to obey the rules of the road, seek education and act assertively as an equal user.

NOTE: “Respect” is treating bicyclists as equal drivers with the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers. Bicyclists are neither inferior nor superior to other road users.

2) Bicycle Driver Education

The majority of reported bicycle-related injuries are the result of collisions with fixed objects, other bicycles, pedestrians or falls due to loss of control. Teaching people simple bike handling skills and increasing their confidence with the vehicle will greatly reduce these accident rates.

The majority of bike vs motor vehicle crashes are a result of bad choices by cyclists (running stop signs/lights, riding against traffic, on sidewalk, in the dark without lights, hugging the edge of the road, etc.). The crash data indicate that regardless of other safety issues in the traffic environment, uneducated cyclists are too often the cause of their own problems.

Law enforcement for dangerous practices like wrong-way riding, riding without lights at night and violating right-of-way should be part of the education process. Poor cyclist behavior feeds the belief that cyclists don’t belong on the roads and fuels animosity toward cyclists. Crash reports feed the incorrect belief that cycling is dangerous and cyclists are vulnerable victims. Fear feeds the behaviors that increase crash risks.
The cycle can only be broken by education. Education will only be widely accepted if:

1. bicycles are treated as serious vehicles;
2. the forces wishing to promote cycling do so by promoting education (like the motorcycle industry does).

When the public is made to understand how easy it is for bicycle drivers to control their safety and interactions with other road users, we will improve both cycling safety and the attractiveness of cycling.

3) Motorist Education/Re-education

There are 3 traffic-culture forces at play for bicycle advocacy:

• actual safety;
• the perception of safety;
• and the effects of hostility.

Fear of hostility causes bicyclists to operate in ways that are inimical to their safety. Riding on the sidewalk or squeezing into the gutter to avoid the wrath of motorists contributes to both (solo-fall and bike-v-car) crash types listed in the previous section.

Bicycling is relatively safe, educated bicycle driving is even safer, but our traffic culture itself is not a paragon of safety. The evening news gives us constant, if not disproportionate, reminders. Unsafe behavior is on display continually, even as most of us elude the consequences.

Improving safety requires changing the way people behave and view their responsibilities as drivers. We need more traffic enforcement, better traffic justice and a greater sense of citizenship and civility. We also need more exposure to laws regarding bicyclists and pedestrians in the driver education and licensing process.

Improving the traffic culture will have a positive effect on everyone in the community, not just bicyclists.

4) Infrastructure

Bicycle infrastructure is a concept that covers a broad range of applications. I’ve divided infrastructure into four basic categories:

Facility improvements that benefit all vehicle drivers: maintaining good pavement/repair of pavement hazards.

Safety improvements for bicyclists: Replacing parallel grates that catch wheels, fixing longitudinal pavement cracks and bad shoulder seams, addressing steep-angle RR crossings, and upgrading unresponsive traffic signal sensors.

Facilities for bicyclists: When behavioral problems affecting safety are addressed, and when the institutional bias against bicycle driving is replaced with respectful understanding of bicycle drivers’ needs, infrastructure can be targeted to solve practical issues of connectivity and access. Intelligent infrastructure solutions are less expensive and less likely to have unintended consequences than facilities that are built in an attempt to bypass education or solve social problems.

Land Use Policy and Transit: Better vision for land use really should be a foundational element, but for most of our cities, that ship has sailed—at least for the time being. However, as our growth has stalled, now is a good time to at least look at policies which would promote bicycle permeability through new suburban development.

Another global asset to cycling is a complete, integrated transit system. When bicycle transportation is added to bus and rail, they complement each other. Public transit extends the range of the bicycle. The bicycle increases the service area of public transit. A functional public transportation system also makes it easier to keep dangerous drivers off the road.

Opportunities

There are opportunities for alternative transportation funding developing at the federal level. Most bike advocates are pushing for money to build facilities without addressing the critical social and education aspects of a healthy bike culture. We need to encourage advocates, community leaders and policy-makers to think bigger and focus on core issues.

I found it interesting that LAB chose a speaker from Copenhagen as the keynote for the Bike Summit. It’s easy to get distracted by the cycletracks, but something more fundamental caught my attention. Danes who ride bikes for transportation don’t think of themselves as “cyclists” or “bike commuters”… in the same way Americans who drive cars to work don’t think of themselves as “motorists” or “car commuters.” Directly related to that, Danes can expect the same level of engineering and concern for efficiency, safety and connectivity on their bike facilities as we do on our roads. Bicycles are also welcome and respected on all roads outside the network of bikeways.

Infrastructure did not create that. Respect for the bicycle as a mode of transportation existed first. We aren’t even there yet.

Recientemente a Biciescuela Granada nos llegó la noticia de que el Plan Especial de Ordenación de la Vega de Granada verá la luz durante el presente año y hemos tenido la oportunidad de leer el Documento para la Concertación, trabajo diagnóstico realizado por la Secretaría General de Ordenación del Territorio y Urbanismo de la Junta de Andalucía.

Hemos encontrado numerosas defiencias en lo que respecta a las infraestrcuturas previstas para los ciclistas y, con la intención de mejorarlas para que integren y no perjudiquen o impidan el desarrollo de los diferentes usos de la bicicleta, hemos redactado las siguientes recomendaciones:

Un taller organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid enseña a circular en bicicleta por la ciudad. El curso se encuentra dentro del programa de actividades que ha organizado el área de Medio Ambiente para esta primavera. Todas las actividades son gratuitas, aunque es necesario apuntarse previamente.

Este taller en concreto está dirigido a las personas que ya sepan montar en bicicleta, pero quieran comenzar a utilizarla como medio de transporte por la ciudad, y hacerlo de forma segura. Habrá sesiones teóricas y prácticas, y es imprescindible tener bicicleta propia para participar en él.

El uso de bicicleta como medio de transporte está siendo promovido por el Ayuntamiento madrileño, que recientemente editó una Guía, en colaboración con la asociación En bici por Madrid, en la que recoge un mapa de calles tranquilas por las que es más sencillo utilizar este medio de transporte. Esta asociación también tiene un servicio que ayuda a quien lo solicita a recorrer el camino entre su domicilio y su lugar de trabajo por la ruta más segura y acompañado de expertos ciclistas, que le enseñan cómo actuar ante los obstáculos.
